Back Around the 4th of July

Monday, September 1, 2014

We spent about a week in Tennessee, back around the 4th of July.  It was a mini friends reunion, arranged in order to meet a brand new baby boy (who was perfect in every way).  And it was wonderful.  All sorts of wonderful.

Even though traveling with kiddos can be extra exhausting, E and C did so good, especially with the long drive to Tennessee.  They just sorta rolled with the big changes in our schedule, meal times, and such.  I was having some guilt about all of it, including just shoving snacks into the backseat and turning on another movie as we drove through dinner, but when we got to the first hotel, Emmitt was enamored.  He jumped on the beds, looked out the windows, asked about everything, smiled from ear to ear, and did his little quiet laugh thing he does when he's completely impressed with something.  Those moments throughout the week (and there were plenty of them) made the craziness so worth it.  One of my favorite things about parenthood is how incredible it is to experience things all over again as your littles experience them for the first time... just magic.

Below are some things I recorded during the week to help me remember, to help me hang on to the comfort and joy that comes with being with friends from your past that you are certain will remain into your future, through it all, forever.

A hotel in Memphis * driving through quaint towns * good music in the car * trees lining the highway * drinks, food * boys playing so happily together * the sweetest new baby * s'mores (Even though I'm typically a classic s'mores kinda gal, we tried 'em with Reese's peanut butter cups, and oh man, they did not disappoint.  My mouth just filled up with spit.) * backyard * food, drinks * fire pit * twinkling lights * bubbles * Cora's first steps! (E crawled for the first time when we visited these friends in Tennessee right after Eli was born, so it was only appropriate that Cora walk for the first time while visiting them right after Jonah's birth.  Well played, kids.) * reality tv * delicious food * world cup soccer * a chill in the air in the evenings, so delightful * looking at old pictures * tasty drinks * seeing our pregnant best friend and asking a million questions * exhausted kids at bedtime * baths * fireworks * another hotel * a quick dinner with Jaron's fam in Memphis * finding a park in an old historic neighborhood and eating Taco Bell as we made our way home * See, all sorts of wonderful.

Friends, please don't think that just because we were on vacation, E didn't continue with his lining up agenda.  Love him.
This is at the hotel we stayed in on the way home and we took this picture right before heading to dinner with Jaron's parents and some extended family, who were in Memphis.  This is one of the outtakes, but I liked it the best.  I'm not sure what we're doing, other than admiring our shoes maybe?  We sure do like shoes.
